Getting started with a smart home can feel overwhelming. Hundreds of devices, multiple ecosystems, complicated setups. Here’s the rational approach: buy five things, in this order.
1. A Smart Speaker (Echo Dot or Echo Show)
The Amazon Echo ecosystem is the best choice for UK smart homes. Wide device compatibility, Alexa routines and a massive UK skill library. Start with the Echo Dot 5th Gen for audio rooms, or the Echo Show 5 if you want a screen for the kitchen. See our smart home picks →
2. Smart Plugs (TP-Link Tapo, 4-Pack)
Smart plugs are the quickest win in any smart home. Plug in a lamp, a fan, a coffee machine — and control it from your phone or by voice. The Tapo 4-pack is excellent value and works with Alexa out of the box. Energy monitoring lets you see what’s costing you money.
3. A Video Doorbell (Ring 2nd Gen)
The Ring Video Doorbell is the most practical security upgrade for a UK home. 1080p HD video, motion alerts to your phone and two-way talk. You can see and speak to whoever’s at the door from anywhere. No monthly fee required for basic use.
4. Smart Bulbs (Philips Hue Starter Kit)
The Philips Hue Starter Kit includes two colour bulbs and a Bridge. Set the mood for movie night, wake up gradually with a sunrise alarm, or automate lights to go on at sunset. The Hue ecosystem is the gold standard — reliable, expandable and genuinely useful.
5. A Smart Thermostat (Hive or Nest)
A smart thermostat can help you heat your home more efficiently. The Hive Active Heating lets you control your heating from your phone — turn it off when you’re running late, warm the house before you get home, and stop heating empty rooms. How much you save depends on your home and how you heat it.
